HRK Street Wok – The Journey of turning Setback into Strength

HRK Street Wok

Cloud kitchens are not rare. But the ones which fill the demand supply gap for the needy always win the game. Meet Kiran Shinde, Kingsley Tixeira, Ajay Shinde and Saraswati Shinde who relied on their past experience and built a sustainable business model that would make a difference for daily wage earners who need affordable and homely meals. At the centre of this journey lies a mother’s dedication who turned a setback into strength.

Here’s their journey in their own words

Not the first, but the boldest

Before HRK Street Wok, we were known for HRK Car Washing Center—a business we built over years with consistency, trust, and a loyal customer base. It was stable, predictable, and something we understood deeply. But sometimes, even well-built things don’t last forever.

Due to unavoidable reasons, we had to vacate our rented space. It felt like everything we had created over the years came to a sudden pause. But instead of waiting for things to fall back into place, we chose to move forward.

Real demand, clear gap

We decided early on that if we were starting again, it had to be on our own terms. That’s when we turned our focus to a space we already had—located at Behind Maroli Chembur, Garage Line, St. Anthony’s Road, Santoshi Nagar. Interestingly, this area had a clear gap—there were barely any food outlets around, yet a constant flow of workers, labourers, and daily wage earners who needed affordable, homely meals.

We saw what others didn’t: a real, everyday demand for food. We had earlier rented this shop to a paneer wholesaler, but recognizing the opportunity, we made a bold call—we asked for the space back and decided to build something of our own. That decision gave birth to HRK Street Wok.

Food that feels like home

This wasn’t a random choice of industry. We observed that people in the area were looking for simple, filling, and affordable Indian meals—something that feels like home. Not luxury dining, but comfort food. So we built our offering around exactly that: Veg, Non-Veg Thali, Vada Pav, Bhajji Pav, Omelette Pav, Bhurji Pav, other quick bites, and even Chai. And that’s where our concept evolved – “Desi by Day, Wok by Night.” Daytime is dedicated to homely Indian food, and by evening, we transition into wok-style offerings with a dedicated chef.

The Heart of HRK: A Mother’s Dedication

At the center of this journey is someone who doesn’t hold a business degree but holds something far more powerful – experience, instinct, and heart: our mother. She leads the entire daytime kitchen on her own—from early morning 7 AM till afternoon – preparing and serving food with consistency and care.

This isn’t her first experience; even before COVID, we had a small chai-nashta setup at the same location. She understands the local taste, the pricing people are comfortable with, and what truly satisfies them. That knowledge doesn’t come from books—it comes from years of observation and hands-on effort.

At an age where many slow down, she continues to run the kitchen single-handedly. It’s a reminder that skill doesn’t always need certification, and passion doesn’t come with retirement. Her contribution is not just operational—it’s emotional. She is the backbone of HRK Street Wok.

From Setback to Strength

What once felt like a weakness, losing a rented business, became our biggest strength. Today, we operate from our own setup. We are not dependent, not restricted, and not waiting for stability—we are creating it. This journey taught us one simple truth: you don’t need perfect conditions to start again—you just need the willingness to adapt.

The Power of Partnership

Another constant through this journey has been our partnership. From the car washing business to this new venture, the trust and understanding between partners remained strong. In uncertain times, that bond made decision-making easier and execution smoother. Because in business, ideas change, but the right people make all the difference.

Still Building, Still Learning

HRK Street Wok is still in its early days. Every day brings new challenges, new learnings, and new opportunities to improve. From managing operations to understanding customer behavior in the food industry, we are constantly evolving. But one thing is clear – we didn’t just start a new business, we built a new mindset.

Looking Ahead

From washing cars to serving meals, this journey has been anything but expected. But it proves something powerful – no setback is final, and no experience is ever wasted. Sometimes, life forces you to change direction. And sometimes, that change becomes your greatest opportunity.
