For thousands of years, glass production has been a major element in our world today. The belief of historians is that glass has its origins around 3500 B.C.E. In the area of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, artisans created decorative beads and small containers through primitive furnace processes. Glass was a rare object produced with great difficulty and therefore was seen as an indication of a person’s wealth.
Roman touch
The invention of glassblowing by Romans in approximately the 1st century B.C.E., allowed ease in producing many glass products quickly and cheaply. The use of glass for windows, containers, and household items was practiced by Romans and served as the beginning of commercial glass manufacturing.
Venetian Craftsmanship
During the middle ages, the Venetian island of Murano was known for making fine-quality glass. Venetian craftsmen created high-clarity glass and also produced fine-quality glass that affected not just architecture but many European decorative arts as well. With the introduction of the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s through the late 1800s, large-quantity manufacturing of glass changed forever. The use of mechanized furnaces and automated methods of glass manufacture allowed for mass production of glass products and made glass products more affordable and accessible.
